about
Theatre Uzume was founded at the New School for Drama in 2014 by Suzanne Karpinski. It is a platform for emerging artists to work collaboratively on the development of multidisciplinary and immersive performance. Theatre Uzume works on a project by project basis.
Uzume is the Shinto Goddess who returned light to the world when she rescued the Sun Goddess Amaterasu through her humor, inspired dance and singing. It is our hope that we may likewise shine a light on on the business of life through connection and inspired storytelling.
Theatre Uzume creates opportunities for emerging artists to collaborate on immersive and interactive projects, as well as to reinterpret classic stories from new perspectives. We bring together media from live rock music, dance, visual art and puppetry to circus. This devised manner of working empowers artists to explore fresh pathways of bringing people together and into the present moment.
