about

Theatre Uzume was founded at the New School for Drama in 2014 by Suzanne Karpinski. It is a platform for emerging artists to work collaboratively on  the development of multidisciplinary and immersive performance. Theatre Uzume works on a project by project basis.

Uzume is the Shinto Goddess who returned light to the world when she rescued the Sun Goddess Amaterasu through her humor, inspired dance and singing. It is our hope that we may likewise shine a light on our understanding of the world.

Theatre Uzume creates opportunities for emerging artists to collaborate on innovative, boundary-breaking projects, as well as to reinterpret classic stories from new perspectives.  We bring together media from live rock music, dance, visual art and puppetry to circus.  This rehearsal-intensive, devised manner of working empowers artists to explore fresh manners of expressing their ideas.

Mission

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”
